Awareness Builds a Better Website

By

When was the last time you actually visited your website? I mean, really looked at it; looked at the layout, the graphics, the copy?

I do at least 2 or 3 times a week. I have successful web entrepreneur friends who make their website their home page when they open up their browser. That forces them to stay aware of their site, check it daily, think about what improvements could be made or what new web-based services they could add.

Competitor’s websites

Another thing you should do at least once a week is visit competitors websites. Did one of them get a new website recently? Has one of them offered a nifty new online service? Are they getting better placement than you in the search engines for your primary keywords? Have you asked yourself why?

One thing I’ve learned in the web copy-writing, search engine optimization and web marketing business is that most people don’t look at their competitors’ sites until they are ready to redo their own.

Look at websites outside your industry

Don’t wait. Look at yours, look at theirs, and look at sites outside your industry for ideas to improve your site’s message and services. And I don’t want to hear that “not invented here” nonsense.

Jay Abraham says he gets his best new marketing ideas by looking at how companies completely outside of the one he’s helping market themselves. According to Jay, companies in the same industry tend to copy each others marketing ideas and then claim that’s the only kind of marketing that works in their industry.

Don’t get caught napping…

Remember what bookstores were like before Barnes & Noble and Borders? All those little Mom & Pop places didn’t get put out of business because Barnes & Noble copied what they were doing….

His approach is to “humanize” the Web, using real information to guide people to buy rather than turning websites into advertisements that people can easily ignore.
