Dave Allen SEO Presentation at SEO Meetup

Dave Allen, president of SEO Practice, gave an SEO presentation last night at the Minneapolis Internet & Search Marketing Authority February Meetup. It was kind of a weird experience because usually, these SEO meetups are just a roundtable with people throwing out problems and other people offering ideas or suggestions.
This is the first time I’ve seen anyone give a formal presentation at one of these. However, Dave barely had enough time because between all the networking and sharing ideas and introductions, we barely left him enough time to get through it.
However, it was worth every minute. Both the preliminary discussion and Dave’s presentation. As usual, I walked away with three pages of precious notes just from listening to all the brain power in the room. I even learned some great ideas from some of the newbies who discovered some great SEO ideas just from trial and error.
Anyway, about Dave’s presentation. The two things I really zeroed in on were his talk about majesticSEO.com and sydermate.com.
Majestic SEO is an amazing non-search engine link database. They send out spiders for the sole purpose of cataloging every link on the Internet. We discussed that google gives lousy link information and will only show you a few of your actual links.
When I mentioned using Yahoo Site Explorer, Dave metnioned that while Yahoo does a much better job than Google, they don’t show you all the links you have either. You can run a report on Majestic SEO that will show you all the links on the Internet coming to your site.
You can also use the report to find “dead” links that go to a page that either no longer exists or has been moved so you can use a 301 redirect to move the link to an appropriate page and get the Google juice you lost.
Spyder Mate also turned out to be an amazing tool. And free to boot. Spyder Mate will scan your website and give you an onsite optimization report you can use to improve the optimization of your website. Dave ran a report on my website, WordsmithBob Online Marketing, while we were there and Dave pointed out some improvements I could make to my website HTML. Kind of a case of the cobbler who’s children had no shoes.
I’ve got some work to do…
