Online Backup Data Storage is Cheap Insurance

My wife and I signed up for Mozy online backup data storage yesterday. She and I were joking Saturday about the house burning down or getting hit by a tornado or blowing up (like a house did in Edina, MN the other day) and using the insurance money to build the house we really want.
It was all pretty funny until my wife commented, “You know, it would put us both out of business if we lost our computers in a fire.”
My wife has been working on our taxes for our S Corp for the last several months, trying to get those straightened out and one. She has five clients she’s in the middle of designing WordPress websites for. I currently have seven clients I’m doing online marketing campaigns or link building campaigns for. And all my Quickbooks records of estimates, proposals, invoices and payments are all on my hard drive.
Any disaster that destroyed my house would be a business ending experience.
Yeah, I’ve got home insurance but that wouldn’t do squat to restore all the data lost. What about your computers? If your office burned to the ground, is all your data and digital records backed up somewhere offsite? And if you make backups on DVDs, how much time does that take you?
We found out that Mozy will back up both of our computers regularly with unlimited data storage for $10 a month. I spend more than that on coffee in a week. We figured we’d be idiots not to protect our businesses that way. And it’s automatic. Doesn’t cost me any of my precious time.
If you want to check out Mozy, here’s my affiliate link I signed up for when I signed up for Mozy. The cost to you is the same as if you went to their site through Google but I get a small commission. If you don’t have a problem with my getting a commission from Mozy, go ahead and just click the link to Mozy Online Backup Data Storage and protect your business.

Bob –
How funny to read this blog post while I’m in the midst of dealing with my own mozy.com account. I do think mozy.com is very worthwhile, but you have to keep an eye on your account.
I just realized that I haven’t been getting the daily backup messages. So I checked my account and learned that it hasn’t been backed up in 20 days. I used the live chat and discovered that I’d missed knowing about an update that was needed.
So even though mozy.com can bring peace of mind, you still need to be on top of the technology as with any other technology you’re using.

Bob –
I agree that it is very important to backup data on one’s computer, particularly if you have a home-based business! It’s amazing when you think about how much information is on your computer and what a problem it would be if you lost it all…so thanks for the post!

Well well i know mozy but it is very expensive.I do prefer safecopy backup.Safecopy backup is cheaper for me because i can backup more than 2computers on one account but with mozy one has to pay for each computer

@ Vicky – i’m not familiar with Safecopy. That may be a great solution. I just use Mozy because we only have two computers that we need to backup (the others are just for presentations and other utiliy work). At $4.95 per month, we just can’t beat Mozy’s cost.

@Jerom – Right now, I don’t think it matters which service you use as long as you are having your data backed up regularly. I think any backup service is good. However, it’s after your data gets wiped out that you find out how easy they are to work with. Hopefully, you’ll never have to find out. I did.
