Advanced Link Building Is More About Don’ts than Dos

Advanced link buildingis, of course, a complicated subject that would require a book the size of a Stephen King novel to even scratch the surface. However, there is so much misinformation or old information circulating out there (and being promulgated by the ignorant) that it is mandatory that you know what NOT to do.
What not to do when link building
I get a lot of clients who read “advice” on the Internet from “gurus” or self-proclaimed experts on link building or search engine marketing. And then they call or email me and tell me about this exciting new link building tactic they want me to do.
Here are some of the worst:
- Swapping links – swapping links is almost a complete waste of time. First of all, Google only values links coming from related subject matter. Which means that if you own a construction business, swapping links with a shoe store is of no value to you. What’s more, Google recognizes swapping links for exactly what it is. So they discount it even more.
The only way you might get some value from swapped links is if the swapped link is from a .edu or .gov site or a site that has a much higher Alexa rank and Google Page Rank. in this kind of swap, they will lose and you will win because their site has much higher value in Google’s perception than yours. By all means, take the offer.
- Link Building Services- I get at least one email every day from some company in India, Malaysia or the Philippines wanting to build links for me. Do not trust link building companies like this. Too often, they will indiscriminately add your link to links farms, questionable directories, or paid link services that Google heavily frowns on.
Always work with an SEO expert that you either know or have been following for a long time and know that they are reputable. I hate to admit it but there are a lot of shady individuals in this business or people that thought this was a great way to make a fast buck and hung out their shingle.
- Relying on just one type of link – Too often I see businesses that are trying to do their own link building campaign who rely on one type of link. It may be Article Marketing, Directory Marketing, Blog Commenting, Guest Blogging, Bookmarking, Social Media or Video Posting. These are all good strategies and there are many others that are equally effective. Here’s a presentation I did to TC Web Pros you can download on Advanced Link Building.
However, you must have a mixture of different types of links or google can see exactly what you are doing. The mixture of links tells Google that your site has greater value because many different types of sites are linking to you. you want video links, directory links, article links and many others.
That is key to effective advanced link building.

Bob – An excellent and informative post on what not to do when conducting a link building campaign! Also, you share some good advice about the need to be careful to work with a reputable professional who really understands what makes a link building campaign successful. I thought it was particularly interesting that you should have a mix of different types of links and not just rely on one type of link in order to demonstrate the value of your web site to Google.
Thank you!

@Barb – Thanks, Barb. As Google’s algorithms get more complex, our link building campaigns must also get more complex to keep up. As always, “quality” links hold much greater vaue that “quantity” links. And just as in real life, a diversity of links shows greater value than a “one trick pony.”
