Link Building – Why You Should Be Building Links Every Day
By
Link building is more important than you know. I was chatting with the CEO of a client company the other day during a break in training his employees in blogging and blog commenting. He told me that before he met my sales person, he had always believed that people don’t look for his type of business on the Internet. It was all about personal networking.
Then he met with my sales person who showed the CEO how many thousands of searches there were per month for the services his firm performed. He was blown away when he realized how much business he was missing out on by ignoring the Internet. That’s when he signed on with us to search engine optimize his website.
And now I was talking to him about link building, the second part of search engine optimization (SEO). He wanted to know what link building was and what it was all about.
I told him that the Internet is one big popularity contest and that the more one-way, quality inbound links there were to his website, the more it looked to Google and the other search engines that you’re a popular website and they should push you higher in the search engine rankings.
Then I also put it in terms that would make even more sense to him.
“You know all that networking you were doing to make connections and get new clients for your business?” He nodded.
“Creating links is the same thing. With networking, you’re trying to connect with as many people as you can in as many locations as you can. Well, with personal networking, you only have so many events and so much time per day for glad-handing, pitching and cold-calling.” Again, he nodded. He understood the limits he faced in networking.
“Well, the more places on the Internet you have content that people are looking for, the more people will find it and follow the link back to your website where your site can make the sales pitch and get them to call you.”
That’s when I saw the light go on. He got that. Link building on the Internet was just 24-7-365 networking; always out there, always pitching his business. In as many places as I could get content posted for him.
“So what kind of content can we post? Articles and stuff like that?”
It was my turn to nod. “We can post articles on dozens of sites, videos on dozens of sites, guest blog posts, white papers, PowerPoint presentations, audio files, you name it. We can even post pictures on sites like Flickr and PhotoBucket. And all of them with links drawing visitors to your website.”
He requested a link building proposal for his firm. So, what are you doing to draw new visitors to your website? You can start by getting a quote for a link building campaign from WordsmithBob!
