A lot of business websites have no  meta tags. It seems a lot of web designers don’t seem to believe basic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is their responsibility. I disagree with that.

I believe there are certain basic things like meta tags that every web designer should be implementing in every website they design. A website is just like any other marketing materials someone designs. Creating a website without the most basic forms of SEO is no different than creating a mailer brochure without any contact information.

However, almost as bad is a website where the basic SEO is done so badly that Google will actually lower the site’s placement because of it. Google actually has an entire section that lets you know what Google expects from any website. If you aren’t familiar with it, go there, read it and fully familiarize yourself with it. If you make Google happy, odds are you’ll make all the other search engines happy too.

Just knowing what Google expects as far as basic Search Engine Optimization is enough to put your small business website ahead of a lot of other small business websites out there.
