Beware Internet Marketing Gurus
By
Internet marketing “gurus” are like ants on a sugar cube. There are hundreds of them swarming all over the Internet. And the vast majority of them are full of crap.
Now I’ll be the first to admit that there are some people out there who really know their stuff. But how do you tell whether you’re going to get a first class, up to date education in Internet Marketing or sold a bunch of old tired “tricks” that haven’t worked for years or are rehashes of off-line marketing ideas?
Here’s my bullshit detector:
Who are their testimonials from?
Are they from a bunch of other people selling their Internet marketing services? Or are they from legitimate business people who have real products or services?
It’s amazing how many of these people show up on each others web sites giving testimonials. They sell each others products, they give each other pats on the back and, most importantly, they sell to each other’s email lists. Oh, and have you noticed their web sites all look the same and use the exact same sales letters?
Avoid these people like the plague.
My primary income is from web site copy writing and search engine optimization for legitimate businesses. On the side, I sell a course on search engine optimization and a course on using search engine optimization and copy writing to multiply your online sales.
I even sell a few books online and offline marketing on my site from proven results getters like Jay Abraham.
But that’s not my primary source of income. Why? Because I make really good money doing search engine optimization and frankly, I enjoy the work. It’s pretty exciting to take a business no one can find on the Internet and get them first page in Google.
And I like the interaction with fellow business owners. They’re good people. They’re straightforward, honest, and most of them really believe that they are in business to help people (and, of course, make good money doing it.)
My courses work because they’re based on my real-world experience helping real-world clients. And I have more than just testimonials from my clients. I actually have proof I’ve gotten clients on the first page of Google.
Caveat: My search engine optimization training courses aren’t cheap. Frankly, their pretty darn expensive. But I figure if I’m going to create competitors, I should be properly compensated for it.
It took me quite a few years of trial and error and testing to learn how search engine optimization really works. If I’m going to short cut you to being an expert, I should get compensated for it. Don’t you agree?
