Latent Semantic Indexing in Search Engine Optimization

By WordsmithBob

Latent Semantic Indexing is kind of another layer of sophistication beyond simply using your search related keywords. It used to be that all you had to do was find some keywords or keyword phrases related to your product or service and sprinkle them throughout your website copy in a properly calculated ratio. Maybe throw in some of those keywords in your meta tags, and try to use them to start your headline and first sentence and you were in good shape.

How does latent semantic indexing work?

Not any more. Latent semantic indexing is where the search engine “spiders” look for terms related to your keywords within your text. In other words, if they only find your keywords in your pages but don’t find words considered similar in meaning or related to your keywords, the search engines will actually lower your ranking.

Think “old” search engine optimization

In one respect, it reminds me of when people used to stack ten to twenty similar keywords in their keyword meta tags hoping to “get lucky” with one of them. Today, of course, we know you should only SEO each page for one or two keyword phrases. But you should take all those related keywords and try to find a way to use them within your text like “supporting characters” in a play.

And if you use an anchored link to connect to another page of similar or supporting content, then make certain that you use those supporting keywords in that page as well.
