#1 Make sure someone proofreads your copy.

There’s nothing more distracting than misspelled words in your copy. And nothing says “I do sloppy work” more than bad spelling or bad editing. The first thing your reader will think is, “What kind of job would this person do on my projects?”

#2 Don’t overwhelm or underwhelm your readers.

I don’t know how many people have told me that nothing bothers them more than getting on someone’s email list and then getting something from them every week! However, the inverse can be just as bad. If you send your eNewsletter or eZine out too infrequently or sporadically, people won’t remember you and delete or unsubscribe your newsletter. Monthly is pretty much the standard.

#3 Make certain you have a Forward to a Friend link.

I’ve gotten a lot of new subscribers from people who forward my eZine, Web Writing Secrets, to a friend or colleague. And people are much more receptive to a newsletter forwarded from someone they know.

#4 Always present a unified brand.

Most email newsletters serve the function of keeping your brand and your name in front of potential clients or customers. If your enewsletter doesn’t look like your website and your off-line marketing materials, the only thing that will result is confusion.

#5 Release your eNewseltter or eZine on Monday or Tuesday.

Research has shown that Mondays and Tuesdays are the best days to send out an ecommerce or b-to-b eZine or eNewsletter.

Follow these five tips and your eZine or eNewsletter will be well on its way to being a successful marketing tool for your firm.

Bob — Thanks for this info. I especially appreciate the tip about the best days of the week to send out info.

Bob – Very interesting blog post on e-newsletters. You point out some top tips for a successful e-newsletter. I write and distribute an e-newsletter and have often wondered if the day of the week I send it out matters or not – apparently it does! When I look back at the day of the week I send out my e-newsletter, the ones I send earlier in the week do tend to have a higher “open rate”. I also was happy to hear that it is best to send a newsletter out monthly.

@Phyllis &@Barbara – The day of the week can vary for some people but the majority of the research indicates Monday or Tuesday. Personally, I find Tuesdays to be a little bit better and I think it’s because people get a bit overwhelmed on Mondays but by Tuesday they are caught up and ready to read an eNewsletter.

Hey Bob – Got a kick out of the fact you broke your own rule #1 in rule #5. (Newseltter). Tee hee. I appreciate the info you put out there, regardless of insignificant typos! Thanks!
