Website Privacy Policy Tips
ByThis one is really a no-brainer. Every day you hear about security breaches and stolen information. Kinda makes people leery about giving you anything these days. Even just an email address.
So if you have a privacy policy on your website, at least those who are nervous about giving out their name and email address to get your boffo e-book or fabulous white paper have a place to learn about what you are doing with their information. And it’s just good “cover yer butt” policy.
I am working on a website right now for a gentleman who owns a remodeling business. Most of his clients are pretty high-end. And he doesn’t see the need for having a privacy policy. Yet he wants people to give him their email address and name in exchange for an e-book of forms and advice for planning their renovation.
People with that kind of disposable income got that way because they know enough to come in out of the rain and they know there are no free lunches. They aren’t going to give him contact info unless they know what he’s going to do with it. We’re still working on convincing him about the policy.
Here’s the web site privacy policy tips:
- Tell them what you plan on doing with the information. Be honest and up front.
- Assure them you will not sell the information or share it with a third party.
- Tell them why you are collecting their email addresses.
- Assure them that you are not tracking their IP address (unless you are.)
- Notify them that you are not responsible for the privacy issues of any website you may be linked to.
- Assure them that you have security measures in place to protect any personal information they may indulge.
- And provide them with a means to contact you if they have any questions about your privacy policy.
