Just a quick note on the 2008 Web Design Competition Winners. While I don’t agree with their choices (and I’m sure no one agrees with their choices for the simple reason that these things are so subjective), seeing who won is a great opportunity to see some of the new and innovative designs out there.

However, remember one thing. All the fancy gimicks in the world and tricky graphics and “oh wow” content will lose you business if they:

• make it difficult for the user to get what they want
• if there’s no organic SEO, online marketing, PR campaigns or PPC advertising to drive people to your site
• your site is all about selling and not also about creating community or providing helpful or valuable information

While innovative design ranks high in the coolness factor, you might want to consider a simpler design that provides an easy experience for users and provides an easy content management system for you…
