Choosing the right URL for your website

By WordsmithBob

This really isn’t as easy a question as it might seem. There are many considerations you have to take into account to make the right decision. For instance, your URL, hopefully, will be the exact same thing as the name you give your website. And the name you give your business.

My business is called WordsmithBob.com because I’m an Internet-based business and my specialty is writing copy for websites. And my URL is wordsmithbob.com.
Simple enough you say. However, the questions get more complex when you consider:

• Do I name my business first or my website first?
• Should I include keywords in the URL?
• If so, should the URL still be the same as the business name?

Some businesses have a name that says absolutely nothing about the business such as Google or Yahoo or Ebay. Those names were chosen for attention. However, most businesses need to have a name that says something about them such as Dominos Pizza or Wilson Chiropractic Center. In these cases, you really need to try and name the website and the URL the same as the business. Because that’s what people will try to type in.

What if you rename the business? Do you change the URL?

Another problem is having an old website and renaming the business. I’ve run into this problem with a number of clients. If your website has a lot of links to it and is getting a lot of unique visitors, throwing away that URL could cost you a lot. Also, if your site is six years old or older, odds are it could have a very good standing in Google.

In fact, there are a number of SEO firms that go around contacting companies whose website is six years old or older and offering to move them way up in the rankings in Google. Why? Because they know that any site that’s at least six years old is viewed by Google as long-term and not a fly-by-night business. And if the site has had almost no SEO work done to it so it has a low ranking, it should be easy to move it up in the rankings. And I mean a lot.

If you have a website that’s at least six years old and is on page three or worse for your primary keywords,  shoot me an email or call me at 612-226-7667. Since I do search engine optimization, I can help you get a big boost in the rankings. Or if your budget is tight or you want to do it yourself, check out the Lotus Jump Internet SEO system.
