Anchor Tags Are Important in eNewsletters, Websites, Blogs and Email Marketing

By WordsmithBob

Boy, there is just no limit to how important anchor links and anchor tags are. I could write an entire article on the importance of anchor tags but for now, let’s just go over some of the essentials so you begin using them

I’ll bet your first question is, “What the heck is an anchor tag?” And your second question is, “what’s so damned important about anchor tags?” I’ll tell you right now. Anchor tags can be used for several things:

  • They can be used at the top of an article or web-page so people can click on them to go directly to the part of the page they are interested in. One popular example is on most FAQ pages. At the top you’ll find all the questions on the page. You click on any one of them and it takes you directly to that question so you don’t have to scroll and hunt.
  • They can be used within the text of a web page, online article or email, to direct someone to another source with more information (like a product or service page within your website)
  • They can be used at the top of your e-newsletter in a list of all the articles and tips in the newsletter so people can just click on the link and go directly to the part of the e-newsletter they are interested in (never assume people want to read your whole newsletter. They don’t. And if it looks like too much to scroll through to find what they want, it’ll go directly into the “recycle bin”.
  • The last thing, and one of the most important things, is that when it comes to search engine optimization, Google loves anchored text. It tells them that you have extra information available for visitors, it tells them that you’ve created a site, page or article designed for the convenience of visitors. And it tells them that you’re web savvy and not just another person cluttering up the Web with tired, print-style information.

Think ahead of time about what you’re putting out on the Web or sending to people in emails or e-newsletters. Use anchor tags. Show some style, web-savvy and concern for your readers and you’ll get a lot more popularity from both readers and Google.

Speaking of anchor tags, here’s an article I wrote on using anchored links within your copy. It will give you a lot more useful information about anchored text.
