SEO plugins can be a difficult subject for a lot of business people. Just getting a WordPress blog up and running and blogging regularly is enough of a challenge. Start talking about plugins and widgets and it’s eye glazing time.

But if you’re a business person, and you’re blogging, I’m telling you right now:

Okay, down to business. The following SEO plugins are must haves to promote your business website:

ADD THIS social bookmarking widget – ever wonder where those “Share this” or “Bookmark this” drop-down menus on web pages and blog posts came from? This is the place. It will allow your visitors to “bookmark” your blog post. This helps spread your post all over the Internet (assuming it’s interesting and informative enough- and has the right keyword phrases in it –  to go viral).

Akismet- While this is not an SEO plugin, if you want to spend your time blogging and not fighting spam, you need it to weed out the worst of the spam. It really works and eliminates the nonsense from automated spam bots people use to get comments on blogs for incoming links. You’ll need an API key to make it work. If you don’t know what this means, I suggest you have someone install this plugin for you.

All In One SEO pack- This baby is the real deal. It can automatically generate your Title, Description and Keyword meta tags. Or you can open it up below and insert your own. If you know about search engine optimization and do keyword research before you write your post, go ahead and “do it yourself.” If you don’t know how to do SEO and you don’t do keyword research for each post, let All In One SEO pack do it for you.

Yet Another Related Posts plugin – This is dynamite. It searches all your other posts looking at keywords, categories and tags and uses an algorithm to determine if any other blog posts are related to this post. If it finds some, it lists them at the end of your post as links. It lists a maximum of 5 posts. And it’s customizable.

Twitter Tools – Tell me you have a Twitter account. If you’re blogging, you must have a Twitter account. Don’t think you have time to Twitter? No problem.

Twitter Tools will automatically upload your blog posts to Twitter. Why is this a wonderful thing? Because a lot of people prefer to use Twitter as their news aggregator.

They don’t want to bother using an RSS feed (a dismal failure for blog promotion). They use Twitter to follow blogs or websites or article sites. They just go to their Twitter account and see what new posts have popped into their box from the people they are following.

Google XML Sitemaps- This is basic SEO. Any website should have an XML sitemap and your blog is no different. This plugin will automatically generate the sitemap and keep it updated.

MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer – Yes, we’re getting a bit exotic here but this is an important tool. It sets you up with a list of RSS blog services (these are the guys that send your blog posts out to other services) and makes certain that you don’t “over-ping” them.

If you “over-ping” them, in other words, keep sending them notifications about your blog posts, you can get blacklisted or banned. Over pinging can happen if you go in and revise or change a blog post several times. Have a look:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SEO Smart Links – I love this thing. Any SEO expert knows that proper linking between content within your website using keywords is a must-have. Google expects there to be links between your content. Otherwise, it makes your website look like all the content on it is unrelated. Your blog posts are no different than the content on your website.

SEO Smart Links scans all your blog posts and looks for keyword phrases (that you tell it to look for), and connects posts to those keyword phrases that relate to it. This is absolutely must have.

Okay. This list doesn’t include every SEO plugin I use for myself and my clients but using them will put you a heck of a lot closer to being fully search engine optimized.
