Linkbuilding ideas are a dime a dozen. Just Google “linkbuilding” and you’ll get all kinds of lists of ways to build links.

The problem is, most of them aren’t worth the trouble to create them. For linkbuilding to be effective, you need to have real content out there, on solid, fairly high page rank blogs or websites, with a lot of similar or related content. And your content needs to have anchor text links in it feeding people to your money site and associated other content.

What’s more, you need a variety of content. You can’t rely on just articles or just blog posts or just videos or just blog commenting. You have to mix it up or Google will see it for what it is. Self-promotion.

A friend and business associate just sent me a link to a press release by WebVisible and Nielsen/NetRatings Report about their investigation into how Internet users interact with advertising. In the press release, they claim that their results show that “search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, MSN, and Ask have become consumer’s most widely used source to find a local business from which to buy“.

If you have a small business or derive a lot of your business from local customers or clients, you really need to read this report. As far as I’m concerned, the most important thing for you to note is that “Search engines are used by 73% of consumers when seeking local products and services — more than any other media type.”

Do It Yourself Search Engine Optimization Presentation image Do It Yourself Search Engine OptimizationDo it yourself search engine optimization isn’t exactly a piece of cake. I know. I do SEO for a living. But I was asked to give a presentation on do it yourself search engine optimization at the TC Web Pros meeting yesterday. Seeing how I’m the vice-president of the organization, I couldn’t exactly say no.

Anyway, I was up until 1:30am finishing the presentation. Got up at 6am, cranked out a bunch of online marketing projects for clients and ran off to the meeting. Managed to get through it without keeling over.

Well, talk about embarrassing. Here I’m selling myself as a great resource for search engine optimization. And then I discovered a link in one of my articles on my website that didn’t work.

Hmmm. That’s odd.

So I start checking all the links in my articles. And none of them work.

Originally, I didn’t have my articles in a separate file on my site. I didn’t have that many and it wasn’t a problem. Eventually, as more and more articles made their way onto my site, it got to be a big problem.
